THE UNLIKELY SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIOR

In her recently published memoir, “An Unlikely Social Justice Warrior: Making My Life Count As A Muslim Feminist”, MPV’s President, Ani Zonneveld, shares her journey confronting invisible lines drawn by religion, gender, and race—all in pursuit of truth and justice.

NOVEMBER PRESIDENTS NOTE

In MPV’S November President’s Note, Ani Zonneveld celebrates the success of Witness, the first recipient of MPV’s Community Arts Grant, and reflects on the impact that films like Witness have to cultivate positive change in our increasingly divided society.

I am a 16 year old from the Bay Area in California. About a month ago I was having a really hard time coming to terms with my sexuality and I was terrified because I had been raised thinking it is haram to be a bisexual muslim. I've spent the last year trying to deny who I am just because of what I've been taught......Then I stumbled upon your website. I read the article "Is There Room in Islam for Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, and Transgender Muslims?" and I cannot thank you enough for providing it. The night that I read it, it felt like I finally had a place in this world. I have been feeling conflicted for so long, but that article helped me realize that my existence is not a sin.

This is a message to thank Ani for the speech she gave at CCMW. Her speech gave me and others a new hope and perspective. It has given me confidence to deal with bigoted hostilities within my community and I was even able to implement her advice in conversation with my cab driver while heading to the airport. I was able to approach his anger about the lgbtq inclusive school curriculum with empathy and patience and was even able to use Islam and the prophet to both set his mind at ease and empower him to see the humanity of marginalized communities such as the lgbtq+ community and guided him even see the value of protecting them.

"I became a muslim more than 20 years ago and have looked for other muslims ever since who could be proud to call themselves feminist, LGBTQ allies and otherwise progressive people. I have always seen Islam as the most progressive religion with a central, simple message that Allah loves all people and that we should seek to do the same. What you have accomplished over the years is very inspirational and important to me and so many others. Thank you!"

RE: MPV's Open Letter to Hamlin University: "God, thank you guys for saying something. I have watched this intensely idiotic story unfolding over the last few weeks wondering where are the voices of Muslims like me who are horrified by the censorship in 'our' name. Truly we are lost as a community if we now feel that art commissioned by Muslims and made by Muslims hundreds of years ago is now somehow too haram to even show to non-Muslims. Insanity. Thanks for being a voice of reason."
